| Our quest for the perfect bee stock for use
in the Pacific Northwest has led us to several
dedicated and sincere breeders. We found this one Bee
Keeper to be breeding stock of exceptionable qualities and
with a diversity of genetics. This breeders stock came from
same genetic pool that Susan Cobey uses in her work. Susan
Cobey of Davis University and Steve Shepard of Washington
State University are involved in importing the drone sperm
of the Old World Carniolan direct from Europe and using this
sperm to improve upon the genetics of the New World
Carniolan. We should be thankful as this breeder is definitely
increasing the genetic pool in this country. These are very
close to being second daughter queens. They are not as swarm
happy as the New World Carniolans and the breeder claims
they are calmer and better producers.
Lately we have been working with the Yugo's. The last two
seasons we have reared the Yugo and this last season,
successfully reproduced a Washington Coastal variety of the
Yugo's. Our original stock was acquired from Tator's in
Vacaville, California. This has been a rewarding experiment.
So far we are extremely happy with the results and continue
to monitor this new arrival to our apiary. |
