New World Carniolan Hybrids • The Carniolans are known for their winter hardiness and rapid spring build up. • These bees work well in all areas of the country, are excellent Honey producers and comb builders. They also show resistance to tracheal mites. • We purchase our breeder queens from Strachan Apiaries, the world's largest producer of the New World Carniolan. Our breeder imported the breeder queens from Europe. These bees are of the same stock that Susan Colby used to develope the New World Hybrids. The Old World Carniolans are not quite so inclined to swarm as the new hybrids. As a rule they are a little darker than the hybrids. Not sure of the exact variety here in the United States. They came from the Primorksy region. they were used for breeding mite resistence because they were already surviving the mites. They aren a bit defensive, but in odd ways. They tend to head butt alot while not stinging so much. They are watchful guards, but not runny. Swarminess and productivity are a bit more npredictable. They were brought to the U.S. by the USDA in June of 1997, studied on an island in Louisiana and then field testing in other states in 1999. They went on sale to the general public in 2000.  Our breeder began this business in 1979, to breed a Disease Resistant stock of bees which was "hygienic" in its ability to clean up American Foulbrood. His reputation for Disease Resistant bees began with the Yellow Russian Hybrid. This stock is selected for gentleness and tracheal mite resistance. It is a dark Italian which raises large brood nests in the spring but is not quick to swarm. The bees are hygienic to clean up brood diseases at an early stage, before they spread and contaminate the colony. Our customers tell us that this line is an excellent honey producer. Today from research in Germany and Minnesota, we know this behavior is also involved in resistance to Varroa mites. Our first breeding step with any new stock is to test and find this trait. The queens and their offspring will all have hygienic Disease Resistance.
